The Kirtanen family

The Kirtanen Family is a collective rather than a band. We come together in kirtan — a form of participatory singing where one voice sings a phrase and the rest of the room responds. Mantras rooted in the Indian bhakti tradition, carried by seven different voices and the people who happen to share the room that evening.

Kirtan

The music becomes a shared space. Voice, mantra, and presence.

The songs are sometimes still and meditative, sometimes rhythmic and lively. Each gathering is shaped by the room, the people, and the evening. No two kirtans are ever the same. Elements of reggae and a medicine vibe can be felt in the undertone, but the core is the traditional form — call-and-response, mantra, and moments of silence in between.
